Giving injections at home isn't as hard or scary as you might think.

How to give a subcutaneous injection

The most common reason that you might need to give injections at home is if your cat or dog is diagnosed with diabetes, and needs insulin as a regular part of care. Our doctors and technicians will explain in detail why your pet needs insulin, how insulin fits into the bigger picture of diet and exercise, and show you how to give the injections.

Before you give your pet's first injection at home, you may want to consult the links below for instructions and videos to refresh your memory.

Note: the items below mention cats specifically, but the technique is the same for dogs.

How to give fluids under the skin

Some chronic conditions such as kidney disease require regular hydration beyond what your cat or dog can reasonably drink. Fluids given subcutaneously (under the skin) are often prescribed for these conditions, and saving your pet a trip to the veterinarian's office can reduce stress on everyone.

Our doctors and/or technicians provide in-clinic training to clients for doing at-home subcutaneous fluids. Now that you're home, and ready to administer fluids on your own, check out the video (linked below) and handout (scroll down to the "files" box) to refresh your memory on the details. The more calm and confident you feel, the more calm and compliant your cat or dog will be!

Note: the items below mention cats specifically, but the technique is the same for dogs.

Giving a treat of canned food (for cats or dogs) after you're done giving fluids can help many pets have a good association with the procedure, instead of being nervous.
