What's new?

Times, they are a changin' at the Lake Mills Veterinary Clinic

LAKE MILLS - It is likely old news to our friends and family that after thirteen years, Dr. Deanna Clark has left Lake Mills Veterinary Clinic. Fresh from her first weekend at The Healing Oasis, it was apparent the lilt in her step was more than the buzz of learning chiropractic and holistic medicine from Dr. Rivera, and suggested our days with our ace associate were numbered. On Tuesday, May 8, she loaded her four dogs and a chicken coop into her hippy bus, and headed to the Buckeye State.

While glad for Dr. Clark, we are bent on continuing compassionate care of our patients and maintaining strong relationships with our clients. After casting a wide net, we are excited to announce the additions of Dr. Beth Wilder and Dr. Gregg Stephan to our skilled staff.

Dr. Beth Wilder is a 2010 graduate of Wisconsin, and her special interests are client communication, education, dentistry, soft-tissue surgery, and pain management. At her previous clinic, she conducted drug trials and introduced low-stress cat handling techniques.

Twenty four hours after her interview, she strolled into the clinic, hung her coat plucked from the set of Happy Days, and was absorbed into the fabric of the clinic as if she’d been there for ten years. Don’t be surprised if she explains a case of kennel cough like something out of Where the Wild Things Are. Dr. Wilder’s mother was a Nurse Practitioner, and described bacteria and the immune system to her daughter using monsters as characters. Beth has had a syringe in her hand since she was seven years old, when their Golden Retriever whelped a litter of puppies in the back of the garage.

While her medicine is cutting edge, off-the-clock she and her husband Dave are straight out of the way-back machine. They can be found cruising the Madison lakes in a custom (by Beth) re-upholstered 1961 Larson boat with gull wings like Johnny Cash’s Cadillac.

A graduate of Jefferson High School, Dr. Gregg Stephan learned to pregnancy-check cows behind Dr. Ed Detmers, shortly before Dr. Stork. His early years in practice were spent in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, until 1994, when he established the Animal Hospital of Sun Prairie. During his tenure, Sun Prairie grew from burb to a city, and AHSP grew into a state-of-the-art hospital. After 23 years at the helm, in the face of family matters and management fatigue, Dr. Stephan stepped down from the practice he established, knowing he still had some gas left in his tank.

Seven months away from the white coat and stethoscope, Greg found himself at the end of his partner Michel’s very last nerve, and missing people and their pets. On a frigid February evening, connected like a blind date by our CEVA rep, Marcy, Dr. Stephan and Dr. Stork found themselves slapping knees and telling practice stories like two old friends. Guaranteed a schedule that will accommodate Musky and Walleye season, Dr. Stephan is anxious to get to know the good folks of the Lake Mills Veterinary Clinic.

We offer advanced training and behavior options... In addition to our full range of dog training classes (from Puppy Preschool and Puppy Primary School, to Family Dog Manners), we have free workshops scheduled year-round, with topics ranging from Rally (agility), to helping a new dog adapt to your home, and learning to better read your dog's body language.

If a class setting isn't the best environment for your dog, we also offer in-clinic and in-home private lessons. You can also schedule "pre-puppy"/"pre-adoption" consultation with our behaviorist to make sure you're prepared for your new furry family member! Our clinic in a nutshell...

As one of only a handful of clinics across the country with a full-time behaviorist on staff, we blend our medical expertise with advanced behavioral skills, and this makes a big difference for you and your pet. From helping your dog bravely step on our lobby scale, to coping with the noises and strange body positions of taking an x-ray, and everything in between, a behavioral approach can turn hisses into purrs, and growls into wags.

Beyond a full-service veterinary clinic, we provide wellness care, dental care, and soft-tissue surgery. In partnership with a local specialist, we also offer in-clinic orthopedic surgery. With comprehensive in-house laboratory and radiology equipment, and access to countless external laboratories, research facilities and specialty providers, our doctors diagnose and treat cats, dogs and cattle, along with occasional horses, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens and other animals in need of care.

Our 10-person team offers a combined 105+ years of experience in animal care and veterinary medicine. We have achieved certifications and specialized training in fields including behavioral therapy, veterinary dentistry, canine ophthalmology, Canine Rehabilitation Therapy, surgical anesthesia, phlebotomy, and dermatology.

We offer on-call and emergency services, including referrals to skilled regional emergency clinics. We also provide emergency care and regular herd health visits for local Wisconsin farms.
